What is a Student Visa and Who is Eligible to Study in the United States?

Many foreign students have questions regarding an education in the United States and have no idea how to begin the process of immigrating to the U.S. and applying to schools in the United States. To begin the process there are several steps that need to be taken by international students to attend a qualifying institution of higher learning. An F-1 student visa holder may also attend a public secondary school in the United States for up to twelve months, but they must reimburse the public school for the full cost of their attendance. Students who are currently in the United States under a different non-immigrant status must change their status to student before they attend school in the U.S. Students can apply for a student visa at the U.S. Consulate in their country or another Embassy outside of the United States. By obtaining this change students will be allowed to apply for an F-1 Visa if they obtain the issued I-20 and meet the following qualifications; 1) students must prove they have the funding to attend school in the United States; 2) students must not intend to remain permanently in the United States after their studies end; 3) students must be proficient in the English language.

Students who are married and intend to study in the United States will need their qualifying family members apply for F-2 status. Children of an F-1 student are eligible to attend public elementary and secondary school. Spouses of F-1 students are allowed to live in the United States but they are not allowed to work in the U.S. A dependent child of a student under F-1 status must be age 21 or younger.

Students who are under F-1 Visa status are not allowed to work off campus for the first academic year of their education. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services or (CIS) has specific rules and guidelines for students under F-1 Visas working on or off campus. F-1 students are allowed to work on-campus during their first year of academic study. F-1 students can begin working on campus as much as 30 days before the beginning of the school year. During their second and subsequent years, students are allowed to work off-campus but only as part of their educational affiliation or directly related to their field of study.

Although the LSAT does not explicitly test your vocabulary, you will encounter some words/phrases that you may only have a partial understanding of. While practicing on former LSAT tests, look up the exact definitions of words that you do not know or are unsure of. Here are some common terms/phrases that trip up LSAT test-takers:

"After all," - This phrase signifies an additional premise after the conclusion has already been stated. Thus, read "After all" as "Because". Be wary of this phrase when it appears in a main point question introducing the final sentence to a paragraph because it introduces an additional premise, not the author's conclusion. See LSAT PrepTest 49, Section 4, Question 16 for an example.

"unique" - In conversation, the term "unique" is often used as a combination of "interesting", "different", "neat", "creative", and "quirky". However, the word "unique" simply means the only one of its kind.

"viable" - You will see this used in two slightly different ways. First, you will see it used to mean "possible", such as a "viable alternative". Second, you will see this used to mean "live-able", such as in a passage with science content that discusses what percentage of a species' offspring are "viable".

"afford" - Often in conversation, this word refers to financial concerns. However, "afford" does not always refer to financial concerns; afford can refer to time, effort, or other factors. See LSAT PrepTest 49, Section 4, Question 21, Choice (C) for an example.

"truth", "true", "correct", "in fact", "prove" - Often in conversation, these terms are used to emphasize opinions, tastes, preferences. However, on the LSAT, if an author states that something is "true", then that author believes that the information's correctness is beyond dispute -- no opinions allowed. See LSAT PrepTest 48, Section 1, Question 3 and LSAT PrepTest 48, Section 4, Question 4 for examples. Likewise, terms such as "wrong", "incorrect", "false", or "disprove" mean that the author believes that something is indisputably wrong. See the conclusion of LSAT PrepTest 50, Section 4, Question 17.

"fail" - This is an extreme statement that something has not worked out at all. If a plan has partially succeeded, then it does not count as having failed. See (C) on LSAT PrepTest 50, Section 4, Question 20.

"same" - In conversation, this is often used as a synonym for similar, but an important distinction exists between the two. It's easy to forget to apply the exact definition of the word on the LSAT -- remember that "same" means that all details are exactly the same between two things. If only one tiny detail is just a little bit different in one thing, then the adjective "similar" applies. See (A) on LSAT PrepTest 48, Section 4, Question 22.

Grades tell it all. They are the measuring stick by which you will be judged when it comes to life during and after law school. During, because you will be competing for prestigious summer clerkships - judicial or private - that will place you down a strong career path in the law. Then there's law review, the highly-prestigious note that attorneys and judges crave for in an associate or judicial law clerk. Generally, there are two paths to making law review - you can grade on or compete for a position through a writing contest.

Law schools are divided into tiers, the best ones being tier one schools. The problem is that there are only so many spots in each school, and with so many people competing for law school admission, the majority are not going to find themselves studying at tier one law school. But fear not, it's not the end of the world.

Remember, it all boils down to grades! This is your gateway to success, no matter what tier your school falls in. Take this analogy for example: Every year, the National Football League holds a draft, in which the top collegiate players are chosen to play professional football. And if you know anything about this, you know that players from top college football programs generally have a greater chance of being drafted simply because of the strong reputation their program carries. Does this mean that a talented player from a relatively unknown, small college has no chance to break the first round? Not at all.

While the reputation and prestige of your school will land you more job interviews, it will be your grades, participation on law review and/or moot court and summer clerkship experience that will land you the job. But it's the grades that will help you join law review and also help you land the top clerkship opportunities.

That said, you need to understand law school exams. Not only are law school exams nothing like you've ever come across, they will, the majority of times, be the sole determiner of your grades. The worst part being that generally most classes will only offer one exam per semester, which will be the final exam. Generally, there will not be midterms, graded assignments or credit for class participation.

Law school exams are for the most part entirely composed of essays. They present long, convoluted hypothetical fact patters full of legal issues. Your job will be to simply spot the issues, state the law and analyze the facts. Many times professors aren't looking for an exact answer, rather, your analysis in reaching your conclusion based upon the facts and the law. To succeed on law school exams, it will be imperative that you understand the law, but just as important, how to analyze issues and organize an argument.

When you write your law school statement, you need to write in a way that shows your skills, competence, and achievements. Think of the person reading your essay as you write. He or she will want to know what you have to offer society as a lawyer. That person also has an interest in your motivations for wanting to be a lawyer and what it is that makes you a better prospect than other law school applicants.

Remember that admissions officers review hundreds of applications. Tell them the true story of the things in your life that made you decide to become an attorney. Do not embellish or say anything false because they will see through it. Do not use clichés that you have heard from someone else or tell them what you think they want to hear. For instance, if you really enjoy helping the homeless, write it down in such a way that it shows your reasons rather than telling them.

One writer's technique that works effectively on essays and personal statements is active voice. Use active verbs in your senses. Passive voice sounds weak and that is not the way you want to come across to the admissions board. That however does not mean that you should try to impress anyone with your knowledge of legal terminology.

A personal statement does not mean writing your complete personal life memoirs. In other words, don't write a book. Instead, write a 1 to 2 page statement using the tips contained here. When you're finished, ask people you know to read your statement. Take their suggestions seriously.

This is perhaps the most important step of all in writing your personal statement. Revise once. Set it down for a day. Revise twice. Set it down for another day. Read it again and revise and edit once more. Let someone read it again and get their opinion of your statement.

What effect it would have on the employment aspects of the applicant.

However, the costs incurred for the treatment are not mentioned in the Regulations but it is discussed by the authorities while taking a decision regarding an individual. The entire timeline for the treatment along with the required costs and speculations regarding the same are considered.

Based on the decision taken by the medical officials, a final call is taken by the visa officer to give a permit or refuse a visa. Thus, it is highly recommended to check the grounds for admissibility before actually filing an application.

Campus Features

Originally the College was functioning in the old Senior High School building in Canton. Towards the end of 1966 it moved out of the building to new location in leased space in Canton. It entails more than what you are accustomed to from law school, where merely showing up for class (while IMing your classmates or playing on facebook) can still get you an "A". Attending a daily bar review class or participating in a structured online bar preparation course, memorizing the bar review materials, and taking practice bar exams is just a starting point. But studying a bar subject for the second time, by definition, makes it more familiar. (2) The Bar Review Course

So you're thinking: "I'm not a 1L or 2L. I'm a 3L about to graduate. I need a plan of attack now!" We believe that taking a Bar Review class is fundamental to your summer study plan. Some choose not to do so, but if you're reading this article, you're probably not one of them. There's bar/bri and PMBR (who have been around for a long time and have helped many law students pass the bar exam). But also consider the many competitors to the traditional Bar/Bri and PMBR, which students are finding very helpful and effective. MicroMash, Supreme Bar Review, and AdaptiBar are such examples. Do some research, because everyone learns differently. One course's methods of teaching bar subjects may be more effective than others.

(2)(a) For those who intend to stay with the conventional lecture-style bar review courses (Bar/Bri, PMBR, Kaplan):

If you decide to do Bar/Bri and PMBR, attend every class and be in the moment. This sounds simple. But many students are tempted to log on the internet and check email. Stay focused because, literally, each minute during the summer is crucial and it is important to maximize your time while in class. Make sure to get to the classes promptly, because they start on the dot at 9:00a.m. (may differ from city to city) and, as they are videotaped, the teacher waits for nobody! Be aware that, in the larger law schools, there will be a 'live' room and everyone else will be forced into alternative rooms where you will watch the lesson on a video feed. So if you think there is a benefit to seeing the bar-review professor in the flesh, rather than on the a screen, make sure you get to your class extra early.

It is highly suggested that you not be shy about utilizing the BarBri and PMPR 'Telephone Help Desk' call in features for any substantive questions you may have regarding the material. Bar review topics do get confusing, especially when you start comparing federal law to state-specific laws on a certain subject (e.g. evidence). Also, it is nearly impossible to ask any questions during the actual class (or impossible if you attend the video).

Note: Kaplan only recently started their lecture-style bar review course to compete with Bar/Bri. We have had several reports, from the July 2009 bar exam, that Kaplan materials had errors and that the practice questions were, in their opinion, inadequate. It seems that they are working out the kinks. DISCLAIMER - this is not the author's opinion.

(2)(b) For those who intend to take online courses (Adaptibar, MicroMash, etc...):

Convenience is a double-edged sword. Some law students may not have the discipline necessary to get out of bed early in the morning with the lure of a few more hours of sleep and the knowledge that they can begin learning any time during the day (rather than a set time every morning) or may be tempted to take a day off and double up the following day. If choosing an internet or DVD bar-review course, set the alarm clock and stick with the program!

The great benefit to online bar review is the ability to tackle sub-categories of difficult subjects head on. For example, when studying for the bar utilizing a lecture/book style course, you will only see a certain number of double-hearsay-related evidence questions and only every so often. If that particular sub-category of evidence is causing you trouble, the BEST way to deal with it is to (a) review the course material, and then (b) do as many practice questions as it takes to get 10 double-hearsay questions (in a row) correct. Most online courses will identify your particular trouble areas for you and provide this highly beneficial, and in the author's opinion more efficient and less stressful, method of making sure you have a firm grasp on every bar subject.

(3) Do Practice Questions and Sample Essays

At the beginning of your bar review, it would not be atypical for bar-studying to take 10-12 hours per day. As you get closer to the bar exam, you will find yourself up numerous nights where you will realize that you've been at it for 14 hours - literally studying from sunrise to sunset with quick breaks just to eat and hopefully shower!

Remember, there are only so many questions the bar exam can throw at you. The more you practice (essays and questions) the more you "learn the formula."

The practice questions are thought-provoking, yet tricky. It is imperative that you do at least 50 questions thoroughly, on a daily basis. Part of succeeding on the exam is picking the "least wrong" answer from the four "wrong" answer choices by utilizing process of elimination techniques.

There is something special about writing. A really helpful trick is to make sure you do not neglect the essays. Aim to do at least 1 essay per night from the very first day of studying for the bar examination, and increase the number essays as the bar exam approaches and your study-routine improves. Do not passively read the answers to the Sample Essay Answers. Make a running outline, by topic, of the frequently tested areas and then study that outline. This helps for both the essays (obviously) and multiple choice questions as well.

Another source of bar-exam failure are those recent law graduates who work while studying for the bar exam. Personal finances are always a concern. But if at all possible, the author highly recommends not working while studying for the bar exam.

While seemingly hypocritical, the author also urges you to maintain some quality of life. While partying is most certainly out of the question for the two months or so that you will dedicate to bar studying - grabbing a beer (singular) once a week wont hurt you. Limiting your alcohol (and, of course, drug) intake is important. Exercising regularly is a must. Taking an hour break to walk, jog or lift light weights can be invigorating and will most definitely help the studying process. Sleep is also important. Studies show your brain needs adequate sleep to best process that barrage of information you will be learning, understanding and memorizing each day.

The Bar will be a very stressful time in your law school career. The goal is to make sure it avoids becoming traumatic. It is hard to comprehend how challenging mentally, physically, and emotionally it is until you actually experience it yourself. But remember - try and keep the exam in perspective and if worse comes to worse, you can take the exam again. Look at these highly successful and powerful individuals who have attempted the Bar and failed... but have not failed in life: 1) John F. Kennedy (failed 3 times), 2) Florida Governor Charlie Crist (failed two times), 3) Democrat Kevin A. Callahan (failed 10 times), and 4) New York Senator Hillary Clinton (failed D.C. bar 1 time).

The author sincerely believes that if you are smart enough to get into law school and graduate, you are smart enough to pass your state bar exam. All it takes is two months of dedication. It really is a hazing process. But, you're not alone and, once you pass, you will look upon your bar studying time fondly - albeit many years later. GOOD LUCK

Coupons have become a real blessing to modern families that find themselves caught between higher prices for necessities, and an ever-shrinking, or in some cases, non-existent paycheck.

You don't have to turn into a fanatical shopper who refuses to buy a single item unless he or she has a "cents-off" coupon for the purchase, but you can, by spending just a few minutes a day, end up saving yourself many dollars at the super-market checkout counter.

If you are among those for whom the economy is not looking so good these days, why not start a coupon club in your neighborhood, church group, or school?

Your group will have fun visiting together as they thumb through piles of newspapers, magazines, and mail advertisements, clipping those coupons they want for themselves along with some to share with others in the group. Soon group members will learn what members of the group are looking for and pass along coupons for those items to them. Should You Get a MBA?

I had a chance to talk with one of my friends the other day who is a product manager working in the telcom space. Carol is basically happy with her job, but she's tired of always gathering requirements and she is already starting to think about the next step in her career - becoming a Director. She told me that she was thinking about getting an MBA; however, she had not made up her mind yet as to if it would be worth the time, energy, and expense required to get one. She wanted to know what I thought?

Just a little background info for you here: I've collected four university degrees. I've got a BS, MS, and PhD in Computer Science and then I went on and just for good measure I picked up an MBA with a focus on Marketing. All in all this took me about 15 years to do. Because of the time, energy, and expense that I've gone through I felt that Carol was talking to the right person!

The first thing that I asked Carol was where she wanted to take her career and what she thought that she needed to do to get there (besides getting an MBA). She said that she had been doing some studying of the last four or five IT people who had been promoted to a Director position.

What she had found that they had all been at the company for at least 5 years, they had been associated with a successful project, they were well known to the Executive Director that they would be reporting to. She then said that only two of the five new Directors had an MBA - the other three had at least a Masters technical degree.

Carol had done her homework! We then spent some time talking about what you can expect to get if you get an MBA. Assuming that you can't take time off from your job to go to school for two years, then you are probably looking at going to night school for 4-5 years.

I realize that there are other options such as the University of Phoenix and Executive MBA programs; however, my experience has been with the traditional butt-in-a-classroom-at-night approach. One of the first questions that I asked Carol was if she expected to be living where she was right now for the next 5 years - nothing could be sadder than moving half-way through a program! Carol said that yes, she expected to be in town for the next 5 years.

I got my MBA for two reasons: I wanted to have the vocabulary that was needed to work with the people who are running the business and I wanted to network with other people who were at the same stage of their career as I was. In the end, I feel that I got the vocabulary that I wanted. A lot of that vocabulary has to do with finance, organizational behavior, and marketing and these had been things that I didn't know much about before starting my MBA.

The networking with other folks who were working on their MBA didn't work out as well. When one attends the big Ivy League schools to get an MBA, you have the advantage of moving though your courses with your peers in lock step. The MBA program that I was in had more people in it and so we were spread out both over time (some people completed in 3 years, some took as long as 7 years) and in courses - there were a lot of courses offered each semester.

This meant that few close relationships were formed that lasted more than a semester or two. In my case I moved out of town after completing the degree and so the value of the networking was even more minimized. All that being said, I believe that if you went into the program with networking as a key goal, you could build up a healthy LinkedIn network by the time you were though.

The final benefit of getting an MBA is that you get a chance to be exposed to a great deal of business information that you may have heard of, but never had a chance to study before. Depending on what your background is, this material may be very straightforward.

Unlike technical degrees, an MBA requires you to work in teams, give in-class presentations and really doesn't have that many problem sets to turn in. Rather, questions require wordy answers - you have to memorize a great deal of information that does not have a formula or numbers associated with it. I found the studying to be easy because it was all new. It kept my interest and was easy to memorize.

After I had shared all of this with Carol, she decided to go ahead and take the GMAT in order to apply to enter an MBA program. What helped her to finally make her mind up is that she took a look at the people who would be her competition for the next Director position and decided that an MBA would set her apart from them.

Law School Admission Test (LSAT) - What You Need to Know

This is one of the most damaging assumptions anyone can make and can cost you a potential "yes" from an outstanding US medical school.

How AMCAS medical school applications are evaluated

The AMCAS system is used by a majority of medical admissions committees to streamline the admissions process for both the applicant and the school. AMCAS is the system that forwards your verified GPA and MCAT information to each potential medical school. This means that instead of having to send an individual application, transcript, MCAT score to each school, AMCAS does it all for you.

There are three essential criteria that are presented to committees via AMCAS: overall GPA, science GPA, and MCAT score. In this article, I will discuss the importance of a high GPA and the strategies that will ensure your position as an ideal candidate for medical school.

Overall GPA vs. Science GPA

A high science GPA is a critical factor in medical school admissions.

The course requirements for most medical schools involves a year of the following: general biology+lab, general chemistry+lab, general physics+lab, organic chemistry+lab. Variable requirements include statistics and/or calculus. All these classes get factored into the science GPA, a "number" that indicates to the admissions committee of your personal ability to grasp material taught in medical school. Even though it may seem unfair, it is the most effective way that admissions office can handle the high volume of applicants in an orderly and timely manner.

The overall GPA plays a role, albeit a minor one, in the medical admissions game. If your overall GPA varies from the science GPA significantly, it indicates to committees of your lack of interest in certain subjects and this may be a red flag for some. This is because medicine is an interdisciplinary field and even though most of it is science, being a successful physician may require effective public speaking and English skills. If you have anything less than a B in these courses in college, it may have some bearing on your chances at getting admission. However, maintaining a high science GPA should be a bigger priority. So if you have to chose between acing your Microbiology exam or writing a winning Poetics paper one late night, I would say go for the Microbiology.

Choosing a School and Major the Maximizes Your Science GPA

As long as you have the above required coursework completed, there is no need to pursue upper division coursework (unless you are a science major). If I had known this earlier, I would have majored in economics or political science and truly enjoyed my lab-free undergraduate days. Instead, I chose to major in biology and spend my evenings writing lab reports and memorizing esoteric concepts.

Do NOT feel obligated to pursue a science major if your future plans include medical school. Instead, pursue a major that you genuinely are interested in- may it be art, dance, quantum physics. This will not only guarantee that you will maintain a high overall GPA in college, but also that you will enjoy your college experience. Also, this is refreshing to a medical school since non-science majors provide diversity and interesting insight to the community. As long as you find a way to incorporate a way to take all the required science classes, you will be okay.

Do NOT major in science unless you know 100% that you will get at least a B+ on all upper division coursework. Every science class you take gets factored into the science GPA, not just the prerequisite classes. So if you decided to take an advanced organic chemistry course out of sheer interest and end up getting a D, this will be factored into your science GPA and will look very poor, even though it was an esoteric course. As a science major, you will have to take more science courses in upper division that can be graded more harshly. There is no need to jeopardize your undergraduate science GPA unless you know you will do extremely well in these classes. I'm not here to discourage you if you really want to major in biochemistry or physics, but I do want to warn you of the possible consequences in the growing stiff competition in the world of medical school admissions.

How the College You Attend Gets Factored In

The college you ultimately end up choosing to attend weighs heavily, but indirectly, on medical school applications. For the most part, your capabilities as a medical school student are represented by the three magic numbers: overall GPA, science GPA, and MCAT.

I chose to attend Reed College because of its research-based curriculum and thesis year. Reed College had the facilities that taught me how to think critically and to do self-directed laboratory research that I thought would be a rigorous introduction to medical research and medical school. In fact Reed College churns out the most undergraduates that end up getting a PhD in biology in the nation.

What ends up hurting me in the end is a triple threat: Reed's anti-grade inflation policy, being a biology major, and being a biology major at Reed. There have only been a handful of 4.0 graduates during Reed's existence. I don't think any of them were in any of the science departments (I'd have to double check on this). Imagine how this has affected my overall GPA and science GPA. Considering how hard I work here, I think that I would've maintained something close to a 4.0 GPA that I had if I had attended transferred to a university. This is especially because Reed's upper division courses also have a graded lab portion, unlike other schools. But this is not just the case at Reed.

Most liberal arts colleges have a tougher grading system than other universities. The combination of smaller class sizes and emphasis on academics rather than grades is what drives the GPA down in liberal arts schools. In smaller classes, professors are more careful in evaluating their students and can have more tougher exams because they don't need to grade a huge volume of exams in a short period of time. I attempted to take organic chemistry at Reed for a semester and dropped it after a couple weeks. The tests were very intensive, involving writing complete mechanisms of reactions and predicting entire chemical structures from scratch. The lab portion was independent. We were asked to try to make a certain chemical with a limited amount of reagents on our own.

I spent my following summer at University of California, Riverside taking the organic chemistry course again. The exams at certain points were multiple choice (!) and the lab portion involved following a simple protocol every meeting rather than using critical thinking to adapt what was learned in lecture into lab. And since the class was well over 200 students, the entire course was streamlined this way so that grades could be put up on time and TAs could minimize the amount of time it took to grade.

Conclusion?

Most liberal arts school have a very strong philosophy on learning rather than being taught. The curriculum is almost always tougher and the average GPA of a graduate almost always significantly lower. Not to put down larger universities, but Reed students could blow UCR students out of the water in organic chemistry. But who is more likely going to get into medical school: the B- student that learned how to synthesize a ester alcohol on his own or the A student that mastered the art of multiple choice and rote memorization? I would say the A student because that is what AMCAS sees and the system is blind to any fine detail.

The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is the most important factor in admission to all ABA-approved law schools, many non-ABA-approved law schools, and most of the law schools in Canada. It is considered by many to be one of the toughest test on the planet for graduate school admission. Fortunately, you don't have to be a genius to get a great score -although it doesn't hurt, either. With plenty of preparation, many students see an increase of 12 or more points on the LSAT test.

With summer here, it is the perfect time of year to study for the LSAT test. We asked M, the founder of TestSherpa LSAT Test Preparation, to share his top five tips for LSAT Test preparation.

LSAT Test Tip #1: Analyze Released Tests.

"The LSAT is more like a sport than a traditional test," TestSherpa's M says. "It doesn't test knowledge, it tests thinking styles." According to M, the best way to improve your thinking style for a high LSAT score is to break apart as many tests as you can get your hands on. Fortunately, LSAC releases previous LSAT tests for students to study. There are two things M suggests you do with your released practice tests. First, take them like the real test and analyze your strengths and weaknesses question by question. If you know your weaknesses, you know where to focus your practice time. Second, spend time trying to see why the test makers wrote the arguments, questions and wrong answer choices the way they did. Understanding what the test is really testing and why is the key to navigating the course on test day.

LSAT Test Tip #2: Focus on Assumptions.

Half of the LSAT test -- the two logical reasoning sections -- are about analyzing arguments. The key to understanding arguments is understanding the central assumption of an argument. The central assumption of any argument is like a hidden piece of evidence. It is a secret key to unlocking the argument author's thinking. Many LSAT questions are based on finding the central assumption, including questions asking you to find an inference, find the assumption, weaken an argument, strengthen an argument or describe a flaw in reasoning.

LSAT Test Tip #3: Learn the Wrong Answers.

"The LSAT test features the same types of wrong answers over and over, quarter after quarter," says M. Your can see an immediate score jump just be being able to eliminate a few common wrong answer types. "There is no penalty for wrong answers," says M, "so if you can eliminate three out of every five answer choices, it's essentially like getting half a point right even if you don't know what the actual right answer is." If you're currently scoring about half of the test right, and then make a guess between the right answer and another answer you couldn't eliminate, you'd score another quarter of the test correct as well. Getting 75% of the test right, even through a process of elimination, could raise your score on the LSAT test above the 160 level.

LSAT Test Tip #4: Don't Fear the Games.

Most students fear the game section because they've never worked with anything like it in their undergraduate curriculum. But the key to a high score in the Analytical Reasoning section of the LSAT test is practice. "Most of our TestSherpa students begin feeling extremely intimidated by logic games," says M, "but when they finish the course, it becomes their favorite section."

LSAT Test Tip #5: Don't Ignore the Written Essay.

Many students don't pay enough attention to the written essay of the LSAT test because it is unscored. Unfortunately, it is one of the key factors that can separate you from the rest of the pack. "Students pick their application schools based on their LSAT scores and GPA," says M. "That means you're going to be in a pile with a bunch of other applicants with similar scores and grades. The written essay, along with your personal statement, work history and some other outside factors, are what help you rise out of the giant pile of application folders.

Almost all colleges have cafeteria, but you will probably find that their foods are too overpriced for their quality. Try to avoid eating in the school lunch room and bring your own meal from home or a grocery store. Not only will you save money this way, but you will also be healthier since cafeteria food is notorious for being sold old!

One last tip for saving money in college is tickets and membership discounts. It's not unusual for businesses such as buses, movie theaters, and gyms to give college students discounts for their services. If you are attending a university then you should be able to pay less for a sports game ticket than a non-student.

How to Get Into Law School - Three Tips for the College Student

I would have never bothered to read an article like this at a time when it would have mattered because, unfortunately, I didn't think about how to get into law school as early and often as I should have. Indeed, if you're already more than half way through undergraduate school, you may want to look for advice somewhere else.

If, however, you are one of those chosen few youngsters who know what you want to do in life years before you have any business knowing such things, then I've got a few words of advice that will help you get into the law school of your dreams.

Although much of this will seem obvious, please take it to heart and try to understand why following these tips can make your life much easier in the future.

Tip #1 - Your GPA

The premise of this article relies on the assumption that you haven't yet had the opportunity to screw up your college career yet. As such, you must make every effort to maximize your grade point average ("GPA") during your undergraduate years.

Others will lie to you, but the truth is that your GPA, coupled with your LSAT score, are the most important factors in determining your admissibility to whatever law school you choose. Let me put this another way - your GPA is much, much, much more important than where you go to school, what activities you participate in, what classes you take, who your grandpa is, etc.

So if you are going to undergraduate school for the sole or primary reason of going to law school, take classes and pursue majors in which you can excel. Your high GPA will make life much easier when it comes time to apply to law school.

Tip #2 - Start Preparing for the LSAT Now

About 60% of prospective law students will do nothing or next to nothing to prepare for the Law School Admission Test ("LSAT"). Another 39% or more won't do anything to prepare until six months or less before their test date. If you get started now, with literally years to perfect your understanding of the test and the time-proven strategies for maximizing your score, you have an excellent chance of getting a score that will virtually guarantee your admission to any school.

Anyone who has been through the process will tell you that the secret to success on the LSAT is practice. I'm not going to discuss the test and its components in any detail, but it is sufficient for me to say that the LSAT test does not test your knowledge of anything. Instead, it is designed to test your ability to think in certain ways.

Anyone can learn how to excel at thinking in these ways, but it takes lots of time and lots of practice. You shouldn't be surprised to learn that the few months before most people take the LSAT is a hectic time. In addition to preparing for the LSAT, you may be preparing your law school applications, finishing your final college courses, and rejoicing in the prospect of your impending graduation.

The result of all this is that even those who think they are preparing extensively aren't even coming close to practicing as much as you could if you start now. So my advice is that you begin reading all the practice materials you can, completing practice tests and even attending LSAT prep classes now.

Changing the way you think - or training yourself to think in a certain way - is a demanding and (biologically) a lengthy process. If you give yourself years of preparation you will demolish even your smartest competitors who have spent just weeks or months learning how the LSAT works.

Tip #3 - Do Interesting Things

In the event even your best efforts don't result in a 4.0 GPA and 175 of the LSAT, you will find yourself in need of the law school admission advice found in my book, Covert Tactics for Getting Into the Law School of Your Choice.

As you will learn, students without premier numbers are given an opportunity to plead their case for admission via a personal statement, interview and/or personal visit. When it comes time to make that case, you should have something interesting to say.

Thus, much as you should prepare for the LSAT now, you should begin gathering ideas for you personal statement now. Don't "volunteer" just for the sake of volunteering, but seek opportunities to do fascinating things that may - or may not - reinforce your desire to go to law school.

Common Application - A Simple Guide to College Admissions

If a field is required, it will be followed by a yellow dot. These answers are very simple and it's best to get them out of the way. The first two pages are a breeze.

The third page is where you start having to make choices. They ask you what your possible majors and career paths might be. You can choose up to three majors and one career plan (from drop down menus). Give this some thought before you answer. Think about what you really want to do or study. Where does your passion lie? Is it music, art, science, math, language? You may want to consult a professional college admissions counselor to help you decide this. Then you go on to answer questions about financial need, and your current high school. There is a place to enter all awards and for advanced courses. You have only 500 characters to enter awards, certificates, etc. List them separated by commas, not on individual lines. When you have filled out the form, you can print it out for a preview before you send it off to colleges.

A great way to be sure that you have filled this form out correctly is to have a college admissions counselor look over the printed rough draft with you, or you can hire a professional admissions counselor who will absolutely make sure the application is perfect.

There will be an area that deals with the essay on the common application. The questions and prompts are listed. Print them out and study them. Take a lot of time developing your essay. Get a good grammar book and be sure to use it. Relying solely on your spell checker and grammar checker included with MS Word will get you into trouble unless you have it well customized. This is another area where good admissions advice will help you get admitted to the college of your choice instead of going to the local community college.

How to Study For the LSAT Exam

The LSAT exam itself has very little relation to what types of questions you will see on law school exams. It is administered to get a grasp on your ability to handle logic questions and whether you can think analytically. You're probably wondering whether you should take a prep course or study by yourself. I studied for the exam by myself so I can only speak to that experience.

The actual LSAT test has 5 35 minute sections and a writing portion for 30 minutes that goes ungraded. What you may not know is one section of the 5 will not be graded. The way the sections are divided out, there is a logic, reading comprehension, and a couple of analytic reasoning sections. There may be one more out of each to provide the experimental part which will be thrown out but because you have no idea which one this will be, you have to act as if each part is graded.

To prepare for the test, I highly recommend you get some older test booklets and practice each as if you were going through an actual timed test. To keep things interesting and judge my progression I would grade my answers after each round. I knew this was a deviation from the actual proceedings, but I wanted to keep things on a competitive level so I would be determined to beat my previous scores.

This method is akin to throwing yourself in the fire. Let me clarify this. In a prep exam, they're going to explain and provide an overview for the test and types of questions as a preface for the test. If you go right at the test, then you will not know what is coming, but after you run the exam multiple times and read why the correct answer was what it was, you will begin understanding the questions and the proper way to dissect and answer them.

Keep taking the exam over and over and if you can, take an official practice exam administered by a school. This gives you a feel of the actual test surroundings. You will want to practice heavy several months prior to the actual exam - somewhere in the four or five month range. This way you will not feel panicked but at the same time know that you cannot delay your studies.

You should also be calculating what your rough score would be on the practice exams so you can see how much you need to improve. If you're not cracking the 150 barrier, you should consult outside sources to help improve your score.

You can save money on studying for the LSAT exam by buying used practice tests online or in used book stores. Also, law schools you visit might have some available.

Studying can seem very boring compared to all the exciting temptations just outside your door. Or the games on your computer. Even watching old reruns of Sesame Street can seem more interesting than the biology text your teacher is expecting you to master!

One reason we often don't start studying until the last possible minute is that we have misjudged how long it will actually take us to absorb and understand the material. If your mid-term is still six weeks away, that might seem like plenty of time left before you need to get around to studying. You might find however, that the subject matter is a lot harder to understand than you thought it would be, and all of a sudden there's no time left to ask someone to explain it to you.

With this knowledge you can pace yourself. You know what your assignment is. You know how much you need to read every night. Concentrate on the immediate task at hand. You don't need to feel overwhelmed by the entire book at one time. Next, work out a system of rewards for yourself. Give yourself a series of small rewards each time you master one chapter, and a larger reward for completing the entire book.

For rewards to work they must be immediate, and personally meaningful to you. There is no point in rewarding yourself with a new fishing rod if you hate fishing.

Rewards don't need to be material objects if there is something else that would really motivate and inspire you. How about attending a special concert, or taking a special trip? You decide. Get creative and think of something that will spur you to take action.

It's very important that the reward take place soon after the work has been accomplished. This creates a sense of positive reinforcement. Give yourself a small reward every time you finish a small part of the job, and a bigger reward when the project is completed. If there is too long a gap between the activity and the reward, it will not have the effect of reinforcing the desired activity.

Besides motivating yourself with a series of external rewards, learn to motivate yourself internally. Tell yourself you're a good learner. Tell yourself you enjoy learning. Tell yourself you enjoy giving your brain a good work out. Congratulate yourself for your efforts. Tell yourself you love acquiring new knowledge, and let yourself feel a joy in learning. Be proud of yourself for the work you do to gain more knowledge.

Citrin's first lesson is as follows:

Talent and hard work are a good start... To achieve greatness requires something more, something subtle. The book is an interesting, sometimes slightly jarring, mixture of personal sketches and attempts to teach how the sports lessons can translate to personal lessons. Citrin inserts his own perspective into the book throughout, which at times read more as a journal than as a teaching book.

One conclusion that remains with me is that the rise of team sports for children, and especially for girls, is likely to be a significant benefit to rising generations of would-be leaders. Citrin has made an excellent case for the lessons that sports can convey, and it's a good reminder that all of those hours of soccer practice may just pay off in later years, though it would overstate the case to say that The Dynamic Path will provide a roadmap for transforming those lessons into business leadership skills.

When you apply to a competitive business school, it stands to reason that your essays, interview, and recommendations should highlight your strengths and mitigate weaknesses. Everyone will tell you that. But it's not always obvious to applicants what these weaknesses actually are - what factors cause admissions committees to raise their eyebrows and ultimately to waitlist or outright ding candidates.

Should we trust Hugo Chavez, who has rigged the elections in Ecuador, Argentina, El Salvador and Nicaragua?

Or should be trust Cuba as a trading partner, a nation that owes nearly 30 Billion Dollars to other nations for trade goods it never paid for? We as Americans should be paranoid of foreign regimes, but our DHS should not be paranoid of patriotic Americans. If you search for them on YouTube, you can see these philosophies brought to life in the classrooms. Then, when you tour the preschools in your area, get a sense of which philosophy they follow. * Try to stay in your neighborhood. This is my best piece of advice. It's very hard to drag a little one far from home, especially in the morning. Plus, if you stay in your neighborhood, your child will make friends with kids who live nearby.

* Choose a convenient time. Length of programs and morning, afternoon or all-day availability varies. What you choose here will also affect the price. What fits your schedule best? Does your child still nap? If so, you may not want to put him in the afternoon program. If you work and have a babysitter, afternoons might be better because you won't be rushed in the morning. On the other hand, if a nursery school is particularly competitive and you are willing to take a less popular time, your child may have a better chance to be admitted. You can switch the time next year (although, be warned, by then your child will have made friends in her class and you probably won't want to switch).

* Find a director you click with. Do you like the director of the school? She sets the tone. Is she someone you'll be able to work with if a problem comes up later? If you need her to help you get your child into a competitive kindergarten, what is her track record? Talk to friends and trust your gut.

* Assess the quality of the teachers. Do they have degrees in early childhood education? Are there assistant teachers? What is the turnover like? When you visit the school, do they look like they are happy to be there? Are they enthusiastic?

* Is the school affiliated with a church or temple? If so, how much religious instruction do they offer? Are you comfortable with that?

* How big are the classes? Size of classes is usually dictated by the state. For example, the state may mandate that in a classroom of 3 and 4-year-olds, there can be 15 students with 2 teachers (a head and an assistant teacher). Some schools will even have smaller classes than the law requires.

* Are you comfortable with the classroom? The room should be light, clean, bright, and cheerful looking. You don't want it to be so neat that children are inhibited from expressing themselves. It should be arranged in a way that children can move around and retrieve materials themselves. Can you see your child going to this classroom every day and being happy? It is important to visit all the classrooms the school uses. I remember considering one program for my daughter that had beautiful classrooms for the youngest students. However, classrooms for older students were located in a dark, unattractive basement.

* What is the outside space like? Ideally it will be located right next to the school and the children won't have to cross a street to get there. One program I considered for my daughter used a local park as their playground. The kids took a van to get there. Even though it wasn't far, I was uncomfortable with that arrangement.

* How much does the school cost? Can you afford it? If it is too expensive, do they have a half-day program that costs less? If it isn't expensive, are they cutting corners you aren't comfortable with?

* What is the parent body like? Do they encourage parent participation? Is it a socially conscious community, a wealthy one, a community where most moms work? If most moms work and you stay home, will you be comfortable? In nursery school, if you feel at home with the community, your child will, too.

* How hard is the school to get into? Some schools are in high demand. You don't want to apply only to those schools. Make sure you apply to a few that you really like and your child has a great chance to get into.

Finally, what is the feeling you get from the children, teachers, directors and all the activities you see taking place at a preschool. The most important thing you can do is to trust your gut reaction to the school and whether or not it is the perfect place for your child. Finding the right school for your child is a personal decision. What's right for you may not be right for your best friend. It is like finding the perfect mate or home. You might not be able to describe what you want before you find it, but when you do, you know it's right.

It is important that there are strict rules to decide who is entitled to a place at each school. The system need to be fair on all pupils, wherever they live and whatever the level of their academic ability. When all parents pay their taxes and all pupils will in the future, it is not acceptable that some receive a better education than others.
